World Car Free Day on Saturday 22nd September
NigelS, one of the CRA committee members, drew our attention to an article in the Guardian this week, celebrating the pristine air above the Isles of Scilly. It also reminded the reader of Wold Car Free Day on Saturday and how this has built up quite a large following from cities around the world since it started in 1996. This year there will be car-free parts created in several cities in the UK such as: Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Cambridge, London, Oxford, Cardiff and Bristol.
Last March we reported on how wonderfully quiet Camden Road was after that massive dump of snow meaning no one drove that day. Would it not have been exhilarating to to have widened that experience to our city centre tomorrow – but alas not!
The irony is that back in 1996, the three cities in the world to kick this off were, Reykjavik, La Rochelle and, wait for it, Bath.
Maybe tomorrow’s rugby at the Rec put the kibosh on it or something but I’d be interested to know why we are not joining other cities in the UK in at least living the dream for a day.
